The self-proclaimed “Center of the Universe, the Republic of Fremont” — as the neighborhood calls itself — is unabashedly odd, with a statue of Lenin at its center, a car-munching troll beneath its bridge, and no end of characters — naked and otherwise — marching in its Solstice Parade. In other words, it feels like home to me.

Not many cities have something as remarkable as Lake Union at its heart. Here’s a lake big enough for ocean-going vessels, connected to the major freshwater of Lake Washington on one side and Puget Sound on the other. In between are the “Sleepless in Seattle” houseboat communities, the weekly Duck Dodge Sail Boat “Races” and along the shore all manner of cool places to visit and dine. Can you imagine how spectacular it would be to live on the slope of Queen Anne where you could see the action all day and all night?!
